Watling Academy

Super school for Milton Keynes

Watling Academy is a purpose-built, 12-form entry secondary school, catering for part of the wider Western Expansion development in Milton Keynes. The new school provides 1,800 secondary places for the community and surrounding area.

Previously a greenfield site, the new building comprises a 3-storey high “superblock”. The design features a main teaching building and sports building, providing both hard and soft outdoor pitches. The main building forms the principal teaching accommodation, with an external courtyard and a large, light-filled, shared hall space located centrally within the building footprint.

The main building’s flat roof provides space for a photovoltaic panel array which has assisted the project in delivering on Milton Keynes Council’s sustainability policies. The success of Watling Academy, achieved through working closely with our client, stakeholders, contractors, and the wider design team, has delivered a high-quality teaching facility for this emerging community.
