Glancy Nicholls Architects have been working with the University of Birmingham since 2004 and have been on their framework since 2011. This refurbishment of the Learning Centre was our second scheme since our appointment to the framework and has since led to multiple projects with the University.
The Learning Centre occupies the lower two floors of an existing building and is one of the largest campus facilities. Our design provides the Centre with flexible learning spaces and open-access computer facilities for general student use. The scheme has created a contemporary and progressive learning environment that supports multiple faculties across the University, making the facility a resource for all. This was achieved through numerous design meetings with the client testing teaching pedagogies. In addition to the internal works, the existing coffee shop was extended, linking it to the Learning Centre, and improving the piazza to encourage pedestrian movement through this main space.
We were also tasked with improving student awareness and use of these new facilities. We achieved this by improving the external landscaping, signage, and branding. Since completion, the facility has seen a marked increase in both bookings and open access use.
