Vibrant redevelopment capturing the spirit of Digbeth

Working with Prosperity Developments, Glancy Nicholls Architects have developed a new residential masterplan in the heart of Digbeth, regenerating a brownfield site to deliver 700 inner-city apartments with a host of commercial, amenity and green infrastructure.

The proposal demonstrates a method for creating a vibrant residential development in a prime location, whilst testing surrounding urban masterplan frameworks.

The scheme places great importance on amenity space for residents, both internally and externally, whilst overcoming challenging flood risk constraints to maintain commercial viability. Areas of the public realm within the development, alongside street frontages, evoke opportunities for local artists to create work within the landscaping and shop frontages, continuing the colourful vibrant culture of Digbeth throughout the development.

The architecture celebrates the area’s rich heritage, paying homage to both the traditional Victorian buildings, and the post-war structures, which, when combined, create the fragmented streetscapes of Digbeth. The use of decorated metal panels references the previous metal pressing works, with the use of material and motif to ground this new community with a unique identity in a rapidly redeveloping area.
