The Falcons Free School project entailed the refurbishment of a Grade II listed building as well as an element of a new build. Phase I involved the refurbishment of the Grade II listed George Hine House, which saw an internal fit-out of the building along with the installation of a lift and external works. There was a challenge in ensuring that the building still aesthetically matched the setting of the Grade II listed Towers Hospital buildings, which are located within proximity.
Ward blocks were demolished behind the George Hine building to make way for Phase II of the scheme. The new-build teaching block was sympathetically designed to complement the newly converted George Hine House. This provision comprises eight additional classrooms with a hall and library. The purpose-built facility was designed to keep with the surrounding context and demonstrates appropriate sensitivity to the listed buildings onsite.
Opened by Nicky Morgan, the finished school has been described “as a dream come true”.
