Student residences in historic landscape

The iconic Chamberlain Hall development is located within the University of Birmingham’s Vale campus, situated within the Edgbaston Conservation Area, as well as within a site on the register of Parks and Gardens of Historic Interest. The lake next to Chamberlain Hall is also of special sensitivity as it feeds into the Edgbaston pool Site of Special Scientific Interest. In response to this, we ensured the materials chosen complemented the historic Vale landscape.

The concept for the Chamberlain building was to create a development which visually links the campus and the city of Birmingham, maximising the benefits of the listed landscape for students and the public.

The award-winning new building provides 726 student bedrooms, split into 5 and 6 en-suite bedroom clusters, and 1-bedroom studios. The design ensures every inch of space is utilised, with bespoke furniture maximising storage. The overall project consists of 3 linear wings, housing student flats, with shared gardens and recreational spaces, as well as a 21-storey tower of student flats and studios alongside a bar, restaurant, and conference space on the ground floor.

The residence is now the University’s most sustainable due to the integration of solar thermal and voltaic panels, along with CHP, which provides heat and hot water to the development and neighbouring buildings.

The University commissioned GNA, after a design competition, to redevelop a student residence originally constructed in the 1960s which had become unfit for purpose, both from a statutory compliance perspective and also in terms of student experience. The result of the process was a stunning range of buildings and an exceptionally popular centre of modern student living.
