Glancy Nicholls Architects were originally appointed to the scheme via the University’s Build Higher Framework. The amenity has been designed to complement the nearby Mason Halls Student Residences, providing a local, and much needed, launderette for the students.

The design of the Social Space and Laundrette blends into its leafy park surroundings by considering existing trees, and the building’s relationship to the canal and Mason Student Residences. As part of the brief, it was also key the Space is completed in time to join the offering provided by the Commonwealth Games organising committee as they house athletes attending Birmingham’s 2022 Games.

Constructed on a small footprint, and clad in western red cedar, the pavilion roof hovers above the ground, offering shelter to the users who might be washing their weekly laundry, or spending time in the study space.

With a focus on providing a sustainable and low energy facility, the building provides a fully accessible, thermally efficient environment (EPC A rated) to complement the other buildings on campus. Additionally, the building also includes ecological design features built into the façade to provide shelter for the local wildlife.

The scheme will be constructed over a 15-week period, with a completion date in June 2022.
