This project is one of four flag ship developments in Birmingham which provide specialist care and residential facilities for the elderly with dementia.
The accommodation consists of 32 long-term en-suite bedrooms in 8-bed clusters with associated dining and lounge areas, 16 respite en-suite bedrooms and 16 intermediate care bedrooms. The project also includes facilities for community use, including a full restaurant, café, hairdressers, activity room, prayer room, full production kitchen, multi-media centre, interactive technology display, gym, physiotherapy, chiropody and consultation rooms.
The four centres were amongst the most sustainable buildings within Birmingham at the time of their construction. Roof-mounted solar thermal panels can generate up to 25% of the hot water requirements of the entire building, whilst under floor heating ensures an even and efficient heat source throughout. This is coupled with the use of energy efficient duel fuel boilers and a highly insulated external envelope, allowing the buildings to exceed the original regulations that they were constructed to.
