Having recognised the difficulty that patients and visitors encounter with wayfinding and orientation during their initial visit to the hospital, the Trust was committed to the construction of a New Main Entrance. This was combined with the relocation of the existing patient/visitor car park to a new larger location next to the main entrance.
The internal relationships of both public and treatment spaces were continually interrogated to create an internal atmosphere which is open, calm and provides simplified access routes to the key hospital facilities for patients, making it easier for patients and visitors to navigate their way around the hospital and thus enhancing their experience.
The new main entrance and reception is a two-storey building to give prominence over the existing buildings and provide a clear entrance point. Internally, it benefits from an atrium space, providing a bright and airy environment which signifies that it is the focal element in terms of massing.
