Glancy Nicholls Architects and Interserve were appointed through a competition by Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council to design and build an extension of the existing Hargate School.
Sandwell Council have been undertaking a series of exercises to determine the viability of utilising existing school sites to accommodate additional pupils by way of further forms of entry, instead of building new schools on other sites.
The proposal for Hargate Primary School was to extend the existing single form entry school to two form entry provision, resulting in an additional 210 pupils with an age range of 5-11 years old.
The existing building was retained with minimum works being undertaken; new window and doors were incorporated to facilitate links externally and to support the free flow approach to education.
The proposal also resulted in the demolition of two portacabins, therefore enhancing the provision of external learning and play.
The existing car park and access was also amended to provide adequate parking for the increased number of staff members.
