This building is the focal point for The Vale, The University of Birmingham’s Student Residential Campus, originally designed by Sir Cadbury Brown it sits at the centre of Edgbaston Conservation area.

The refurbishment transformed a traditional catered Student Hall into high quality self catered en-suite student bedrooms with lounge and dining facilities at the upper floors, and 1 / 2 bed roomed post graduate flats at first floor. The ground floor and basement house two bars, restaurants, student welfare, administration, and Student Guild facilities.

Patrick Nicholls was responsible for the design and contract administration of Shackleton Hall prior to forming Glancy Nicholls Architects, GNA were then retained to complete the contract administration and site inspections up to completion in September 2004.
