The College of Medical and Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham is a major international centre for research and education in medicine, medical sciences, dentistry, nursing and physiotherapy; and the Barnes Library occupies four floors in the central block of the Medical school.

The existing entrance foyer and library reception was poorly light and unwelcoming area, with dated and tired interior finishes. The scheme brief was to renovate the Medical School Entrance foyer and the ground floor of the Barnes Library to improve student services and library facilities together with creating a contemporary and welcoming entrance.
